Black Bears win Districts!

The Black Bears simply dominated the other three teams in the Cal Ripken 12U District 6 Tournament on their way to the championship and a berth in the Southeastern PA State Tournament in Warrington June 30th - July 4th. The team outscored their opponents 37-5 in the three games they needed to secure the championship.

The first game of the double-elimination tournament was against Lehigh Valley Forge. The Black Bears needed only three innings to win this opening contest 15-0. Sam S was the main offensive weapon for the Black Bears, going 3-3 with two doubles and a walk-off 3-run home run while driving in seven. Austin B got the start for the Black Bears and pitched two no-hit innings, striking out two. Alexander F entered in relief to pitch one inning and preserve the shutout.

The semifinal game against the Quakertown Panthers started with the Black Bears getting on the board first. Austin B hit a one-out single, stole second, and advanced to third on a ground out. He scored when Connor W hit a double to left, putting the Black Bears up 1-0. They would add a second run in the top of the third when Danny H hit an infield single and eventually scored on a Sam S RBI ground out. The Panthers tied things up 2-2 in the bottom of the third but the Black Bears regained the lead 3-2 in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles by Will S and Alexander F. Sam S pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth and the Black Bears once again got back to work, scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth and five runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away and cruise to the 10-3 victory. Danny H led the Black Bears on offense, going 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Sam S got the pitching start, scattering five hits and three runs over 4.2 innings, striking out five. The win propelled the Black Bears into the championship game against the Hatfield-Towemencin-Souderton Titans.

By virtue of the Black Bears undefeated record in the tournament entering the championship game, they would only need one win in two possible games in order to secure the championship. One game was all they needed, and that game was never in question. Ryan W got the pitching start for the Black Bears and pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first to set up their offense. Ryan W drew a lead off walk and scored on a Sam S knock to put the Black Bears up 1-0. Owen B added to the lead with an RBI groundout, scoring Sam. Ryan W came back out to pitch the top of the second and simply struck out the side. Will S then led off the bottom of the second with a single and scored when Alexander F recorded a knock of his own. Cole C walked to put additional pressure on the HTS defense, allowing Ryan W to drive in Alexander F on an RBI groundout. Now holding a 4-0 lead, the Black Bears’ Ryan W continued his shut down performance on the mound, once again pitching a 1-2-3 top of the third. Meanwhile, the Black Bears offense could not be stopped and scored another four runs in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 8-0. The rout was on. HTS managed to score two runs in the top of the fourth, but it was not nearly enough and the Black Bears came out in their half of the inning nd plated four more runs to end the game due to the 10-run mercy rule 12-2. Ryan W delivered a complete game, 4.0 IP performance, limiting HTS to three hits and two runs, all when the game was out of reach, while striking out six. On offense, the Black Bears nine-hit championship game was headlined by Owen B and Alexander F, who both went 2-3 and drove in a combined three runs.
