10U Wins Ripken Districts!

The Boyertown 10U team ten-runned all four of their opponents on their way to the Cal Ripken District 6 Championship, held on their home field at Boyertown Park.

The tournament started off with a bang in a 15-0 mercy rule-shortened thumping of Souderton. Boyertown exploded out of the gate, scoring 11 in the bottom of the first. They would add another four in the bottom of second. Meanwhile, Brendan S and Declan K shut down the Souderton offense, holding them to only two total hits. Brendan S swung a hot bat, going 3-3 with 2 RBI and scoring twice himself.

How does a team follow up such a dominant performance? The Bears offense decided another 11-run first inning in their game two contest against Lehigh Valley would be a good start, and they were right - this time the Bears would win 13-2. This time, Sam N and Logan S shared the pitching duties, holding Lehigh Valley to four total hits over four innings. Sam N went 2-2 with a walk and three RBI, while Isaac S had a big 3-run triple in the big inning.

Perhaps it felt like a bit of a let-down when the Bears were held scoreless in the first inning of the winner's bracket final against Quakertown. Not to worry, they ended up defeating this opponent 13-1. The Bears scored first, plating a run on a patented Boyertown get-em-on, get-em-over, get-em-in sequence: first a leadoff single by Sam N, then a sacrifice bunt by Isaac S that moved Sam to third, then an RBI single by Declan K. The Bears increased their offensive production in the top of the third, scoring three to push the lead to 4-0. Boyertown used a relentless procession of singles to score these runs - Collin P (lead-off), Stephen B, Garrett G (RBI), and Hudson C (RBI). They again bested that production with a 5-run fourth, to push the lead to 9-0, most of these runs coming courtesy of walks. After a scoreless fifth, the Bears completed their scoring with a four-run top of the sixth. Hudson C led Boyertown hitters with a 3-4 three-RBI game. Hudson also started the game on the mound, throwing three no-hit shutout innings, fanning six. Collin P and Jon C entered in relief, combining to hold Quakertown batters to only five hits.

The championship game featured a rematch against round two opponent Lehigh Valley, who had rallied through the loser's bracket after losing to the Bears earlier in the tournament. The championship game had a similar outcome, with the Bears winning the rematch convincingly 13-3. The Bears struck early, scoring two in the bottom of the first on a Stephen B lead-off walk, a Garrett G sac bunt, and singles by Hudson C, Sam N (RBI), and Declan K (RBI). The second inning was even more productive for the Bears, where their offense exploded for eight additional runs to push the lead to 10-0. The Bears batted around in the inning and nearly every Boyertown player reached base in the inning, Liam M starting things off with a lead-off walk. Lehigh Valley clawed back three runs in the top of the third, only to have the Bears score three more of their own in the bottom of the third to push the lead back to ten. Isaac S pitched a 1-2-3, two-strikeout top of the fourth to close out the game with a mercy rule early finish. Sam N pitched the first three innings for the Bears, holding Lehigh Valley to three total hits while striking out four. He also led the Bears in hitting, going 3-3 with 2 RBI. All eleven Boyertown players reached base in the game.

Bear marks:

  • The Bears scored at least 13 runs in each of their four games, while holding their opponents to 6 TOTAL runs
  • If one were to only look at the Bears' games, it might be concluded that the opposition was weak. An analysis of the other contests where the Bears were not involved shows mostly low-scoring, competitive final scores: 5-3, 9-4, 10-0, and 5-3.
  • With the win, the Bears advance to States in Kimberton, July 1-5
