Black Bears win City-County!

The Black Bears finished off a banner year in the City-County League, earning a league-best 19-2 regular season record and a league championship, thanks to a 4-0 run through the double elimination playoffs. Their smallest margin of victory in their dominant playoff run was 9 runs.

Their first round playoff matchup was a 19-1 blowout of Exeter 2. The Black Bears had 15 total hits, while a quartet of pitchers (Mason M, Shaun C, Drew M, and Carter R) held Exeter to only two hits and two walks. Six Boyertown batters had two hits in the game - Carter R, Mason M, Kaden G, Roman K, Shaun C, and JD H.

The Black Bears' second round playoff game was against Wilson. The Back Bears scored at least one run in each inning on the way to a 14-2 win. Boyertown scored three in the bottom of the first in a two-out rally that saw four consecutive base hits (Bobby Y, Kaden G, Roman K, and Luke M). They added a run on an error in the bottom of the second before Wilson got on the board, scoring two of their own in the top of the third. Boyertown responded with another three run inning, this one thanks to singles by Mason M, Kaden G, Roman K, and Drew M. With a 7-2 lead, Roman K pitched a 1-2-3, five-pitch shutdown inning to further reduce their opponent's hopes and help the team cruise to the victory. Kaden G had a huge game for Boyertown, going 4-4 with 5 RBI. Boyertown used five pitchers (Luke M, Roman K, Cole W, Kaden G, and Bobby Y) to hold Wilson to only three total hits and one walk.

The winner's bracket final featured a matchup against 3 seed Mifflin, a team who had early in the season given the Black Bears one of their two league losses. The outcome of this encounter between the teams was never in question, with the Black Bears cruising to a 9-0 shutout win. Boyertown started the scoring in the bottom of the second when Drew M walked, advanced to second on a steal, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Cole W single. The Black Bears would add four in the bottom of the fourth when Bobby Y recorded a lead-off knock and was joined on the basepaths by Kaden G on a four-pitch walk. Roman K made Mifflin pitching pay with a line drive double to center, scoring both runners. Roman would score three batters later on an RBI groundout by Cole W. The final run of the inning came when Luke M walked and Jackson K drove him in with an RBI single. With a comfortable 5-0 lead and dominant pitching from Cole W (3 IP, 1 H) and Kaden G (1 IP, 1 H so far in the game), the Black Bears had to be feeling pretty good about their chances in the game. They did not rest on their laurels. The bottom of the fifth saw more scoring with three consecutive singles by JD H, Carter R, and Mason M, the last recording the Black Bears' first run of the fifth. With Mason M on base (Carter R had been out attempting to score on Mason's single), Kaden G launched a 2-run homer to left to put Boyertown up 8-0 and effectively put the game out of reach. Nine Boyertown players had hits in the game, with Carter R and Cole W each recording two hits. Equally as important was the strength of Boyertown pitching, with Cole, Kaden G, and Bobby Y combining to strike out eight while yielding only three hits and one walk.

Having won the winner's bracket, the Black Bears had to wait for the winner of the loser's bracket for the championship game. Mifflin and 2 seed Daniel Boone battled to a 1-0 Mifflin win in the loser's bracket final, setting up a Mifflin-Boyertown rematch in the finals. The result was much the same as the previous playoff matchup, with Boyertown crushing Mifflin 14-4 in a mercy rule-shortened five innings. Mifflin got on the board first in this one, scoring two in the top of the first. Boyertown was undaunted and proceeded to put up a 9-spot in the bottom of the first. The offensive explosion came when the first eight Boyertown batters successfully reached base. Carter R and Mason M set the table with a pair of lead-off walks, and back-to-back singles by Bobby Y and Kaden G scored the first three runs. The offense reloaded with a Roman K single and a Luke M walk, setting the table for an RBI single by Drew M and a bases-loaded walk by Cole W. Mifflin changed out their pitcher (no outs had been recorded yet, and five Boyertown runs were in) and were able to record the first out of the inning. That first out proved to be only a momentary pause in the offensive onslaught. Shaun C resumed the attack with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single by JD H that included two additional runs after an error by the left fielder. The score after one very long inning of play was 9-2 Boyertown. The two teams would trade runs in the second, but Mifflin never recovered from the first inning barrage. Leading 13-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Jackson K hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a Shaun C grounder, and scored on a mercy rule walk-off single by JD H. Every Boyertown player reached base via a hit or a walk at some point in the game. Bobby Y, Kaden G, and JD H all had two hits for Boyertown. The Black Bears used five different pitchers in the game (Shaun C, Mason M, Roman K, Drew M, and Cole W) to hold Mifflin to three total hits in the victory.
