The Grizzlies are one of four 2021 Pennsylvania Youth Legion Baseball Eastern Regional Champions as they won the regional tournament they hosted with a 1-0 victory over the West Lawn Owls. Their six-team regional tournament began on Friday 7/16, with all games played at Grizzlies Field at Boyertown Middle School East. The team went 4-0 en route to the title with wins over Junior Legion Programs from Fort Washington (3-1), Avon Grove twice (5-2, 3-2), and finally West Lawn in the Finals on Monday.
Elliot Schadler took the mound for the Grizzlies in the Championship game and was too much for the Owls. Schadler hurled a masterful complete game 1-hit shutout, striking out seven and giving up no walks. His pitching gem required only 76 pitches. The Grizzlies only needed one run, which came at the top of the 7th inning. With two outs, CF Matt Smith started the Grizzlies rally with a hard hit groundball and was able to reach first base before the Owls' first baseman could end the inning. On the first pitch to the next batter, C Pat McNeill, Smith stole second base. On ball four to McNeill, Smith stole 3rd base and was able to score the winning run with a head first slide after a wild throw down from the Owls' catcher. The Grizzlies were then able to shut the Owls down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th to close out the game.
Coach Miller and Company will travel to Berwick beginning on 7/23 where they hope to repeat as State Champs after winning the title in 2019 (the 2020 Season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
