11U Wins Ripken Districts!

The Boyertown 11U Advanced Play team rolled through the field to win the Cal Ripken District 6 Championship.

The Bears' first round game was against Upper Perk, and they tallied runs in every inning of the mercy rule-shortened contest, winning 10-0. While the offense was scoring, Sam S was dealing from the mound, hurling a complete game 1-hitter while striking out eight of the thirteen batters he faced. Sam S also ended the game on offense with a two-run mercy rule walk-off double in the bottom of the fourth.

Game Two featured a matchup with the host team for the tournament, Quakertown. This game started out tighter than the first, with the Bears scoring two in the top of the first and Quakertown answering with one run in the bottom of the first. Ryan W started the Boyertown scoring by drawing a two-out walk and then scoring on a Sam S double. Cole C drove in Sam S with a knock of his own. The Bears' offense continued the scoring in the top of the second when back-to-back singles by Danny H and Austin B scored a run, and Austin B later scored on an RBI ground out by Sam S. Holding a 4-1 lead, the scoring for both teams abruptly dried up until the top of the sixth, when the Bears hung a crooked number. The six-spot started after Quakertown pitching loaded the bases with one out. Jacen F took advantage of a passed ball to start the Boyertown scoring. With runners now on second and third, Alexander F (batting) and Will S (on third) perfectly executed a safety squeeze to put Boyertown up 6-1. The Bears would continue to make Quakertown pay for their mistakes, scoring Owen B on another passed ball. With the bases now empty, Austin B remedied that by singling to right. The Boyertown bats now hot, they proceeded to record three hits and a walk over the next three batters - Connor W RBI double, Ryan W RBI single, Sam S walk, and Cole C RBI single. With a 10-1 lead more than enough cushion, the Bears held Quakertown to a meaningless run in the bottom of the sixth to gain the 10-2 victory and a spot in the championship game. Austin B, Cole C, and Jacen F all had two hits for Boyertown.

Having won against both teams in the three-team, double-elimination tournament, Boyertown now had to wait for the winner of the loser's bracket elimination game. That team would be Quakertown, and the championship game result would be very similar to the first meeting, albeit in even more dominating fashion for the Bears. This time, Sam S and Alexander F would combine for a no-hitter as the Bears shut out Quakertown 10-0. The Bears scored three runs in each of the first three innings and then walked it off in the bottom of the fourth in a mercy rule-shortened contest. The scoring got started in the first when Austin B was hit by a pitch and Connor W walked, both of them scoring on a Sam S two-RBI single. The second inning started in much the same way - walks to Jacen F and Will S led to an Owen B RBI single and Alexander F and Connor W RBI ground outs. The Bears decided to reverse the trend in the third, with Cole C, Liam H, and Jacen F loading the bases on back-to-back-to-back singles, and a Will S walk scoring the first of three runs in the frame. The championship mercy rule walk-off magic belonged to Sam S, who scored Ryan W to end the game on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Bear marks

  • The Bears outscored their opponents 30-2 in the three tournament games
  • With the win, the Bears advance to States in Warrington, July 1-5.
